First Day of Class
This morning was the first day of class. Each morning we get a wake-up call (or at least that's what Anju and I think of it, considering neither of us brought an alarm clock) by the Chai Tea Man at 7:30am. He gives us our cup of chai, and this is a nice little luxury that I'm starting to love. Drinking chai in bed. hehe. At the same time, M W F there will be the dhobi coming to ask if we have any clothes to be washed. Each item is 12 rupees, with smaller items being 8 Rs. As opposed to the states, pretty much every time you wear an article of clothing you have to wash it, because it gets drenched in sweat. Though Pune is on the other side of the mountains from Bombay it still gets quite hot here, and a bit humid (though not as much as Bombay).
This morning we ate breakfast at 8am, which consists of some kind of Indian breakfast food, along with chai, and white bread spread with either lots of butter or jelly (think sugar with red food coloring). At 8:30am we met in the lobby and went as a group to class. Just so the first day wouldn't be so overwhelming. We take Rickshaws. Little cars with three wheels. With three people absolutely smooshed (even with three tiny girls) in the back. they're open air on the sides, not doors or bars, so you sorta have to be careful not to fall out or have anything sticking out of the sides, cuz you pass within a centimeter of the other cars and motorcycles. Whenever there is too much traffic and we stop beggers come up and try to get money from you.
Deccan College
So we ride rickshaws for about 25 minutes down this strange route (I would have no idea where to go) to Deccan College. We have one tiny room, only a bit larger than a pierce 9x11' room. in which we each have a plastic chair and clipboards for desks. the windows are open and it's nice to hear the birds and sounds from outside. it's also nice for a breeze because we don't have air conditioning.luckilywe do have a fan. First is beginning Hindi, from9:30-10:15am. It was a great first day, and I reallylike the professor. I felt like wehad a great start. Then we have a 15 minute break and then we have our State and Society in Contemporary India class from10:30-12:30am. More on this later. I have to get going!
Death by Rickshaw, or Bike
No kidding. The easiest form of danger here isn't the guys on the street selling you Cocaine and Hashish (they persistently offer), or by being mugged (the beggers, though incredibly persistant and loving to follow your every step, are quite nice), it's by being hit! Crossing the street is the hardest obstacle of this entire program. Who would have thought? With every post, every email, I put my life in danger, just with walking a few blocks.

I found a cafe in pune. 2 blocks (or whatever you would consider blocks) up. Quite the trek though. And every time you cross the street you feel like you're gong to die. Tell my mom i love her says carla. no kidding. but it's how it is. beepin cars. they come about a centimeter, if not closer, next to each other. bikes. rickshaws (which we'll be takin to and from class each day).

it's much cooler in pune. but that's not saying much. anju and i have a decent bedroom. but by american standards it's pretty bad. and the bathroom is gros and tiny. showers are by the bucket. and water comes in one temperature. luke warm. i love it though.

our first meeting in a few minutes. what will the teachers be like? our TA is awesome. like new best friend. tinyindian girl/lady. she lives right next door and she loves to party. she's so helpful. yesterday i was goin to go to the prince of wales museum and the indian museum of modern art, but i ended up just talking with Nama the entire time. i'm so glad to have her with us.

But the program still seems to be in shambles. or maybe it's just how it appears. sorta like how india appears, but really it's not. just a different organization that we're all used to. and different timing. for instance. yesterday the 4 hour busride to pune. crazy. monsoon came. no tarp. bags on top of the car. and we stopped in the middle of it. to find the only western toilets around. where? mcDonalds. in the middle of the slums was this mcD's. it was super nice. we were shocked. once to pune we had to stop over 12 times for directions. our drivers really have no idea where they're going.

Here!
Oh my. SO MUCH to type! I'm in Bombay/mumbai right now. In the old part of the city. Today i took an hour boat ride to Elephanta Island and saw some 650ad caves with temples built inside. Basically we all came in, took a 45 minute ride to our YWCA, slept, got up at 7am and pretty much were told "You have 36 hours to do anything you want. Go explore, just stay out of trouble and dont' get arrested". So that's what we're doing. Walking the streets, touring the neighborhood. It's such an obstacle to tour anywhere though. Cars are chaotic. so much is different. it's a city of beauty and slums. gorgeous buildings and beggers. more to write later. i have to get going. im traveling to pune/poona tomorrow by bus. time to go back out into the humid muggy air.

Off to India
I'm heading out. Hopefully updating soon. Wish me luck on a smooth, nice relaxing flight. Crossing my fingers.

A Final, Already?
Yes indeed. Unfortunately, my professor hasn't finished writing it. So I have to take it tonight, meaning that I can't really do anything today (like go downtown, or go back to the Chihuly exhibit). Sad, but I guess it's better than him emailing the final to me in India on Thursday when I'll be completely distracted and will have forgotten everything about Iceland (well, not really, but it still would be a pain).

I like Messanger Bags
I want the new Blogger Bag. But I don't need it, nor do I want to pay for it.
Sifting
..through hundreds of emails, most of them junk. So is it worthwhile to go and click the "unsubscribe me" link at the end of each email. Does it actually work? Or should I just delete them all. Well, either way, this sucks.
Portland's Website
Portland Web [dot] Net is officially up! Now I just have to get the energy to write some articles. I'm excited about this new website, I think it'll be a great way for people to connect in the Portland area. And encourage blogging.
India
So I leave for India in about 48 hours!!! And the plane ticket is still not in my hands. This is making me a bit nervous, but it's supposed to be shipped by FedEx today, which means that I should get off the computer and start waiting at the apt. There's still so much to do before India. But at the same time, I really don't have that much to pack. I still think that I'm forgetting something. Someone help!

Orientation Day
Leslie and Ellen are just about the nicest girls ever, I've decided. I've invaded their apt for a while now. I feel a bit bad about it, mostly because I have all of my stuff stacked up in their living room taking up space, but since I'm leaving in 4 days I have nowhere else to stay.
So today is the first day of orientation. All the new first-years move in and start to unpack. The campus is very busy, and all of USITE is closed (which is really annoying) so I'm back in the Hinds computer lab to check my email real fast before I zip back to the apt. It's feels different to be in this building on a Saturday when it's deserted.
To Do Before India
*Buy a mini-alarm clock
*Buy locks for my suitcases
*Get traveler's checks
*Email lots of people
*Update my address book
*Figure out my classes for winter quarter
*Catalog all of my pictures from Iceland that I just got developed
*Visit with as many people in Chicago as possible
*Go see the Garfield Park Conservatory Chihuly exhibit one more time. (I went three times last spring, I just love this so much!)
*Buy more film for my camera
Photography
I got my Iceland pictures developed. They turned out great, I think. Some of them were a little fuzzy due to my newness with the camera, and others turned out much better than imagined. And I have Aurora Borealis photos too! *smile* I wish I could share them with you all. Unfortunately, I doubt I'll have the patience or the time to scan them in before I leave.

Back from Wisco. Mapping of Devil's Lake was irritating. A compass, paper, pen, and pacing the 3-4 mile loop of the shoreline. Then over an hour to map it using a protractor and ruler. What a project. Can't we just use GPS? ;o)
Biggest thunder (it shook me!) and lightening ever. Plus the rain that proved that the tent was not 100% weatherproof.
India in less than 5 days. oh my oh my oh my. excitement.
I saw Paul for 20 minutes.
No more wet clothes. The luxury of clean laundry. finally. and a shower.

Iceland
Iceland is such a dynamic country. Both where a hot spot exists and where the Mid-Atlantic Ridge comes onto land, it is a place of geologic wonder. Luckily, during our field course we spent 10 full days touring the country, in a small loop. We flew into Keflavik and boarded a bus (fitting all 27 of us) to start our Study Tour. We arrived at 6:30am after a long flight first to Baltimore and then flying up the East Coast over New York and then off over the Atlantic to Iceland. The sun was just coming up as we landed and although we were all very tired (Iceland is five hours ahead of Central Time) we were all so excited. There was a gorgeous stained glass sculpture/artwork piece just outside the airport that was absolutely beautiful. It was made out of metal and red, green, yellow and blue glass in the form of a 30' tall slightly curved rainbow coming up from the ground. I really wished that I could have taken a picture then. I took one when we left Iceland yesterday, but it was slightly drizzly so I don't know if it will turn out well enough to show anyone.

Driving around the Reykjanes Peninsula we first went to the lighthouse for breakfast, which consisted of sandwiches (salmon, ham and cheese) and hot chocolate.

ahhh. no time to update the blog. and i didn't even get through the first 45 minutes there. ;o)

I'm back in Chicago. All anxious to head off to Iceland on Thursday. Back in good old Hinds Geophysical Bldg. Back with the old gang, plus a few new fieldcourse particpants. This is going to be a great trip!
