BookWorm
The past couple of weeks since I've been home I've done nothing but read. I've been absorbed by books and in the past week and a half I've read:

Coffee Will Make You Black, April Sinclair
Anywhere But Here, Mona Simpson
Shampoo Planet, Douglas Coupland
Midwives, Chris Bohjalian
and currently I'm reading A Fine Balance, Rohinton Mistry

Any suggestions for upcoming reading?
I really dislike politics in general, especially elaborate and silly speeches from any particular candidate running, but the past two days I've been at work and needing something to listen to. Recently, Seattle's KEXP has let me down, so I've turned to NPR and their coverage of the GOP as well as the general interest stories. I just finished listening to Rudy Giuliani's speech.

TriMet Update
Today was the first official day of geocoding. On Friday we ran my carefully cleaned and restored data through and I came out with great results. Only 6% were unmatched! And 11% were tied. So today I started matching the tied results. I'm now down to 284 out of the original 652.

Shower Update
It went well, I think. And I had fun. Baking all day Saturday and cleaning all last night (we used my mom's nice china and crystal which has to be handwashed) was worth it. :o)

Tonight after work Nicole and I went to pick up my bridesmaid dress. It's so cute! But I will need some alterations so the top actually stays up (it's strapless). :o) The wedding is only one week month away, and this weekend is her shower. I think it'll go well, but I'm nervous....there's lots to do.

Nicole and I came back to Ethan's summer place and he made us tacos for dinner and then baked us chocolate chip cookies. Mmmmm, chocolate gooeyness....so good. He's definitely husband material. ;o)

Things at work are going well, but I'm still on an active pursuit of a full time job in Portland for the rest of the year. I really want to stay here. Let me know if you have any leads for me! I'm open to anything: environmental consulting, healthcare, social work, education, non-profits, GIS/cartography, anything.

Lots on my mind, but no time to blog.

John needs to start a blog!
An Ode to Nathan and John: it's 1am and I love you both so much. Thanks for making my night enjoyable and always fun. My elementary school buddies. :o) We need to hang out more often!!

I'm now officially addicted to Acro. It's fun, like Balderdash, only with acronyms.

i still love portland. every time i come back i never want to leave. but i really need a job. starting nov 5th i'll be unemployed, and that seems so soon with three weddings to fill up my time in between. i feel like i need to start saving up for something, but it's undetermined what that something is. a big trip. a house. a car. an excape.
two things have been occupying my time and not much else. 1) work 2) reading. i haven't even lifted the phone to call people. on the one hand i really want to see old friends, but on the other hand the lazy part of myself just wants to lounge at home. in my beautiful house and beautiful yard. with my family. and feel alone. because really, if they cared, wouldn't they be the ones to initiate once in a while? but that never seems to happen. and then i get mad at myself, because even people who do initiate i haven't called back. i just want some time to rest. i don't want to drive anywhere. i want to bike or walk or take the bus. just because i can drive doesn't mean it's fun, or that i want to.
i want to get back into the exercise mode. i feel like running every day and biking and swimming and skipping and all that, but all i've really done is walked a few miles to and from and during work. but not much else. i need some motivation. i want to go running with claire around the reservoir like we used to do. and then down to the hawthorne fred meyers to try on swimming suits. the old neighborhood was so good.
i need a hiking partner. an adrenaline partner. anyone up for it? seriously.
i want to visit all the parks in the portland metropolitan area. looking at maps all day long and geocoding streets with trimet has made me realize that i really don't know portland as much as i thought i did. there's so many new places that i want to explore. and i would like to bike/bus/walk it as much as possible. which means i need a good bike and to buy a bike lock. i'm going to start biking the 10 miles to work each mornign.
ok the library computer time is up. time to get off.

I need help.

In two weeks I'm throwing Nicole her Bridal Shower and I need some ideas for some fun games. I've been looking around online and all the ideas I've read are completely stupid. I need something creative and fun. If anyone has some tips, please send them to mosier @ gmail. com

It's 5:03pm PCT and I just did a query in ArcMap for all the Taco Bells in the Portland Metropolitan area.
This is making me hungry.

Blog entries will most likely be few and far between. I’ve started a full time job: a three month grant position working at TriMet. Until November 4th I’m a GIS Technician, one of three interns here in the GIS department. I think it’s a pretty neat position, but I definitely wouldn’t be able to do this for longer than three months with the current project I’m working on. It’s tedious and I have to stare at a computer screen all day. But there are some perks: my coworkers are a lot of fun, I get to decorate my workspace with a lot of maps (right now I have two USGS Alaska maps on the wall that I’ve hung up—one physical map with all the villages located, and one geologic map of the state), the pay is pretty good, and I get a picture identification keycard that lets me have access to the building (making me feel special) and gives me FREE RIDES everywhere with TriMet! :o)

My job is pretty simple, but I find it interesting so far. I’m geocoding the 2004 TriMet Ridership Survey. Around 9,000 people filled it out indicating a lot of information including where they came from, where they picked up the bus, where they got off the bus, and where they’re headed. Now my task is to take this data (it’s already been entered into a database file), clean it (making sure all the streetnames are spelled correctly and addresses are mostly valid, locating landmarks that might have x, y coordinates already and filling those in), and then geocode the rest so that the locations may be matched up with the map. Then marketing will do a big analysis on it. I'm trying to work hard on getting done with the project as soon as possible, that way, I can spend some time at the end on making maps & other analysis aspects.

I know Portland pretty well, but I’m also learning a lot about the surrounding areas and tons of new streetnames. On Sunday, Paul and I biked around Portland as we participated in the annual Bridge Pedal (24 miles). While we were biking north up to St. Johns we passed Chautauqua Street and I was so excited to recognize it and find out exactly where it was located. Today I looked it up to find the etymology of the word and also learned some history about the Chautauqua Movement.

Really:
*If you ever want to know where your bus/train/streetcar/trolley is I have a birds-eye view with real time GPS tracking
*GIS is so awesome. And TriMet has so many amazing datalayers. I can look at aerial photos of the entire metropolitan area, I have shapefiles of all the schools, employer data, and any kind of boundary you’d ever want.
*I get to laugh at stupid streetnames, such as “Beef Bend”
*Please don't put your location as "The Bar" or some vague place if you ever fill out a survey, at least make something up that's a little more humorous if you're going to actually fill it out.

Questions of the Week
1.) If you could name a street, what would you call it?
2.) What are some of your favorite street names?

Goodbye Alaska....for now
Well, it's my last few hours in Anchorage. For the time being at least. My time has come to an end. One the one hand, I'm incredibly excited to return back home to family and friends and my new job tomorrow morning, but on the other, I really love it up here. Anchorage is a fun city, and the weather is awesome right now. I'd love to take a couple more days off and go hiking.
On Sunday I drove over to Whittier through the tunnel, a new experience for me. It is the longest highway tunnel in North America. (13,300' or 2.5 miles and it goes straight through the hillside to the town of Whittier.
On the way in, waiting for the tunnel to open we stopped by Portage Glacier and checked out some of the neat icebergs floating in the lagoon. I love glacial ice. Portage Valley and surrounding area is so impressive. Glaciers buckling in the hanging valleys above you, slowly creeping along the rocks, there are dozens of them in the surrounding area.
Sunday night we returned late to Anchorage after misjudging the tunnel release, and yesterday I ended up spending the entire day at the Quality Schools Institute, speaking with hundreds of teachers about education and the Quality Schools Model (standards-based education, which I've grown found of!). Then last night I had dinner with Carrie, Jake and Dane at Bear Tooth and rented a movie.
My plans for the rest of the day are to finish up my tiedyeing and silksceening, to drive over to the USGS and buy some maps, eat a good lunch alone at some neat restaurant, and to continually pack in preparation for tonight. I have so much junk that I've aquired; I really have no idea how it's all going to fit in my two bags.
